They are fixed to the substratum by means of a small disc formed by the basal cell (Fig. 2 c). Fig. 2. Goniotrichum elegans (Chauv.) The fdaments (Fig. 2 a and b) consist for the most part of a single row of cells and in some specimens these were almost the only ones which occurred, but several specimens had filaments which more or less consisted of 2—3 or even 4 cells in transverse section. The cells in these filaments are irregularly arranged, ') The reason I do not follow Dr. Howe in using Zanardini's name for this species is because it seems impossible judging from Zanardini's description and figure to say quite certainly which species of Goniotri- chum we have to do with.
