In its early daysit was progressive beyond its was one of the first in the city to adoptevening services, and one of the first touse the Hymn Book in public did the congregation more fullyjustify than it is doing to-day the reputa-tion it has always borne as one of the mostsuccessful suburban charges in the city. XXXI.—GALLOWGATE UNITED FREE Gallowgate Church. The Gallowgate is one of the mostancient, as it is also one of the mostfamous, streets in Aberdeen. Amid allthe changes of the centuries it has stooda veritable landmark in the city. Informer times it was associated with thepunishment of crime on the gallows, andit would appear that in these latter daysit is to be prominently associated withgreat institutions and movements for theprevention of crime and the ushering inof better social and religious conditions forthe masses of the people. The congregation of Gallowgate UnitedFree Church is one of the results of aneffort to grapple seriously with the pro-blems of the locality. The origin of thecongregation is not a matter of ancienthistory. It dates back little more thanhalf a century, yet there were several in-teresting features connected with the in-ception and prosecution of the movementwhich called it into being. It representsone of the earliest home mission
