Engineering construction research. Researcher with a robotic ultrasound monitor that is inspecting a welded joint. The ultrasound scan will reveal any weaknesses in the joint. This process is designed for inspecting structures at nuclear power plants. Structures in nuclear power plants must meet high standards of construction quality, since ruptures of joints could allow radioactive material to leak into the environment. Robotic inspections are also needed to inspect radioactive areas of nuclear power plants when they are operating.
