. Atlas of the rare vascular plants of Ontario. Rare plants; Botany. HABITAT: Dry. grassy openings in rich hardwoods and grassy woodland edges. STATUS: Rare in Canada. Possibly extirpated in New York; threatened in Ohio; rare in New Hampshire and Vermont. NOTES: Carex retroflexa is similar to two common woodland sedges, C. radiata (Wahlenb.) Small (=C. rosea sensu Mackenzie) and C. rosea Schkuhr ex Willd. (=C. convoluta Mackenzie). Carex retroflexa may be distinguished from these two taxa by its smooth perigynium beak and spongy, distended, often dark-coloured perigynium base. Previous reports

Possibly extirpated in New York; threatened in Ohio; rare in New Hampshire and Vermont. NOTES: Carex retroflexa is similar to two common woodland sedges, C. radiata (Wahlenb.) Carex retroflexa may be distinguished from these two taxa by its smooth perigynium beak and spongy, distended, often dark-coloured perigynium base. Previous reports of this species from Ontario were based on misidentifications. REFERENCES / SOURCES Evans, 1976.
