Located on the northern tip of Pharos Island at the mouth of Alexandria's Eastern Harbour, the Citadel of Qaitbay is a 15th-century defensive fortress built on the Mediterranean sea coast of the city. Constructed from 1477 to 1479CE by Sultan Al-Ashraf Sayf al-Din Qa'it Bay, this impressive fortress was intended to protect the city and country from the threat of the expansionist Ottoman Empire.
