It was proclaimed a town on the16th May, 1905, it has a population of some 600 people, and possesses substantialstone buildings, the principal among these being the Agricultural Hall in theshow grounds, adjacent to the railway line, in which the most important ofthe agricultural shows north of Maritzburg is held. Included in its otherpublic buildings may be mentioned the churches, library, two or three hotels,the sanatorium, and the Masonic Lodge, and. owing to the enterprise on thepart of the local council, the water supply is excellent.
