Alexander Mikhailovich Butlerov (1828-86), Russian chemist. On a trip to Europe in 1857 he was converted to the now widely-accepted model of chemical structure, with atoms with fixed valencies (the number of bonded neighbour atoms each atom has) held together by single or multiple bonds to form molecules. Butlerov published papers on the oxidation of organic compounds and studied polymerization reactions.
