Howard, son of Alexander Hamilton and Sarah Jane Howard,was born in Hallowell, Me., August 5, 1844. He attended the schools of histown until he was sixteen years of age, when he went to Bridgewater, j\Iass.,to learn the tinsmiths trade with a engaged in the manufacture ofcotton gins for the Southern trade. The business becoming prostrated,owing to the Civil War, he returned home, and attended the Hallowell HighSchool until 1862, when he entered the ITniversity, and graduated B. S. in1865; was a member of the 6 A Fraternity. In the spring of 1866, he went to ^Minnesota, and engaged in the govern-ment survey of public lands until 1870, when he took a contract from thegovernment for surveying several townships on the line of the Northern PacificRailroad, embracing some of the best land in their grant.
