Lime kiln. Cutaway artwork showing the internal and external structure of a traditional lime kiln. The kiln has a cone-shaped burning chamber, two air inlets at the base, and is constructed of brick. The burning chamber is filled with layers of crushed limestone and wood. When loading is complete, the kiln is kindled at the bottom and the fire gradually spreads upwards. The heat generated produces quicklime (burnt lime, calcium oxide) through the calcination of the limestone (calcium carbonate), which decomposes in the heat to produce lime and carbon dioxide. Lime is used in the building industry and in waste water treatment.
