Stevenson screen containing thermometers and other meteorological measuring and recording devices. The screen is designed to protect the thermometers from the effects of direct radiation and rainfall (precipitation), whilst allowing the free movement of air through the screen. The screens also ensure that conditions at different weather stations are as nearly standardised as possible, allowing a true comparison to be made between temperatures measured at different locations. The thermometers seen here, which are very sensitive to variations, are a minimum-maximum set of thermometers (horizontal) and a humidity thermometer (vertical, centre). The devices at either side are recorders.
