Sighetu Marmatiei, Maramures region, Romania. The Cimitirul Saracilor (English : Cemetery of the Poor), in the outskirts of Sighetu Marmatiei, is dedicated to the political prisoners who died in prison in the years of the communist regime. Hundreds of political opponents were buried there, anonymously, during the Fifties. The town of Sighetu Marmatiei, with its special prison, was the epicenter of repression. The cemetery also includes some slate tables, carved with the names of the deported Romanians who died in the gulag and prisons of the Soviet Union.
