As light passes through a prism, the bounding surfaces being non-parallel, the bend of the rays at emergence is added to that at incidence and the colours of white light are spread out into a fan. At the top are the invisible infra-red rays, next the visible spectrum from red to violet, and then the invisible ultra-violet rays.
