Displacement reaction of copper and silver nitrate solution. When copper metal is lowered into a solution of silver nitrate the Ag+ ions pull electrons off the silver crystals, which in turn remove electrons from the chip of copper and produce copper ions, thus setting up a simple electrochemical circuit. For each copper ion that forms in solution, two silver ions will add to the silver crystal structure. At 36x24 millimetres the centre image is over 3 times life while the surrounding images show the progress over 30 minutes.
