Church: Ajuda with Statue

This is where the recent history of Brazil started. The Portuguese Pedro Álvares Cabral, captain of the fleet which discovered Brazil, sailed south along the Brazilian coast, until he found a bay where the waters were particularly tranquil. He called the bay Porto Seguro. A marble monument: Marco da Posse, marking Portugal's possession of Brazil engraved with the royal seal of the Portuguese Crown, is a centerpiece on the historical site. Across the river inlet is the small town of Arraial d'Ajuda with it's own small historical site. In 1549 the first Jesuits arrived, they founded Arraial.
