South Street Seaport (Pier 17), adjacent to New York's Financial District, is an historic district of renovated early 19th century commercial buildings and sailing ships, founded as a museum in 1967. Sailing ships include the 'Peking' 4-masted steel barque, built in 1874 and retired in 1975, and the wrought iron 'Wavertree' built in Southampton, UK, in 1885 and bought by the museum in 1968. Several restaurants cater for tourists and local people.
