The cathedral was built on the grounds of the Pokrovsky (Intercession) convent in Suzdal in 1510-1518. In Medieval times, the helmet shaped domes of Orthodox Churches served as a reminder of the spiritual warfare waged by the Church against the forces of darkness and evil.
