This rotation iseffected from the starting platform in front of the engineby means of a screw and link motion, either operated by asmall air-engine or by hand, as required. It was originallyintended to use a small steam engine, but this was foundto be inadvisable. The reversing is carried out quite simply by means ofthis arrangement in about twelve seconds from full speedahead to full speed astern. The levers are lifted clear ofthe cams, the cam shafts move back or forward as the casemay be, the levers dropped down again, and the engine isthen ready for running in the opposite o ^ CONSTRUCTION OF DIESEL MARINE ENGINE 277 In other details the engine does not present many pointsof difference from the Vulcanus motor. The lo^^•er part ofthe cyhnder is bolted on to the main casting so as to bereadily removable in order to examine and dismantle thepistons, and this means is certainly an advantage for marinework. The pistons are water cooled, and the exhaustpipe consists of a channel of large rectangular section, whichenables a silencer to be dispensed with. It was desired touse exhaust gases for heating a donkey boiler, which providessteam for various auxiliaries, but this evidently requiressome modification in the boiler. The Gusto Motor.—This is an engine of the two-cyclesingle-acting type hitherto built in relatively small sizes, that is to say, in powers of 350 and below. It is mainlyof interest in that it is one of the few Diesel engines of thetwo-cycle type in which scavenging by means of ports isemployed in
