Historic Clopton Bridge crossing the river Avon at Stratford Warwickshire seen from the south west looking towards the town.


The 14-arched stone bridge over the Avon commerates Sir Hugh Clopton. A local of Stratford-upon-Avon he became Lord Mayor of London. The 15th century benefactor of Stratford upon Avon Hugh Clopton paid for Clopton Bridge and also provided funds for the restoration of the Guild Chapel. 'Sir' Clopton was born in Stratford-upon-Avon and his family home eventually became William Shakespeare's finest home; New Place. No records have been traced to prove Hugh Clopton was ever knighted to become a geniune Sir.
