A rare sketch of the first school house built in Iowa, USA built in 1833 (at Burlington was known earlier as Flint Hill or Rock Hill or Shoquokon (Shok-ko-kon) in Native American Sac and Fox Indian language, Flint or Rock Hill. It is said to have got its name of Burlington via a competition (or prize draw) won by a man named John Gray who suggested it be named it after his hometown in Burlington, Vermont . He received a $50 prize for the suggestion. Other record state that Gray bought the first plot in the new town and was given the privilege of naming it.
