Assemblages of this kind have thecredit of promoting a humane and socialspirit, if they do nothing better; thechurch is too sacred a place for the ex-change of courtesies, or the display ofgraces, the lecture-room tasks the under-standing, and the theatre rouses if it doesnot often allay and purify the sympathies;but for a harmless, sparkling, folly, com-mend us to the Opera.
