The atmos-phere in winter is quite moist, and though it isseemingly dry in summer, during the long ab-sence of rain, pianos and furniture, and wood-work generally do not shrink as in many places, owing, doubtless, to the prevailing cool windsfrom the ocean. It is rarely cold enough forfrost; plumbers work needs no protection, andhot days are equally rare, occurring only whenthe summer ocean winds yield for two, or at mostthree days, to winds from over parched and heatedplains to the north. The air is rarely clear so asto reveal distinctly the outlines of hill and shore. STREET SCENE IN SAN FKANCISCO. at Swantons, and one will be taken to the beachand brought back from it at hours of his ownchoosing. At this beach one. will linger andlinger, picking up finely-polished pebbles, manyof which are fit to be set as jewels. Pescaderomay be reached also by stage from Santa Cruz, and the ride along the coast is wild, interesting, unique and full of interest. The time requiredis a day, whether coming from San Francisco orSanta Cruz, and the same to return, and no onewill spend less than a day there, so that to seePescadero means three days, and there are fewmore enjoyable ways to spend so much time. Climate.—The climate of San Francisco ispeculiar, and can not be described in a fewwords. It is equable on the whole, there beingno great range of temperature, and the differencebetween that of winter and summer beino^ small. across the bay, a misty haze like that of easternIndian summer, usually prevailing. After rains, and notably after frost
