In1841. he took part in the overland journey from Vancouvers Island to SanFrancisco. He was commissioned a lieutenant, December 7, 1843, and servedin the Pacific squadron, 1844-46; the Mediterranean squadron 1847-49; onthe African coast, 1851-52; at New York, 1853-55; East India squadron, 1855-58, when he took part in the reduction and capture of the Barrier Forts in theCanton River. The years 1858-60, were spent on duty at the PortsmouthNavy Yard. He was commissioned a commander, July 2, 1861, and served activelyduring the Civil War in command of the United States Ships, Supply andSaratoga. While in command of the former vessel he captured the StephenHart, a blockade runner laden with arms and stores for the Confederates. Onthe Saratoga, he was attached to the South Atlantic squadron, operating on the. SKETCHES OF ACADEMY CADETS. 85 coast of Georgia, where he commanded a division and conducted severalexpeditions that captured Confederate troops and destroyed stores and saltworks. For these services he was twice thanked in general orders by AdmiralDahlgren and was commended for his zeal, discretion and good services tothe country in a letter from Secretary Welles, 26. He commanded the U. S. S. St. Marys, on the Pacific Station in the Spanish fleet thxeatened to bombard the city of Valparaiso, his promptand firm action upheld the honor of our flag and afforded protection to Ameri-can citizens and their property. On April 4, 1867, he was commissionedcaptain and placed on the retired list. Captain Colvocox-esses was the author of a work entitled, Four Years in aGovernment Exploring Expedition, narrating the cruise of Captain Wilkesamong the islands of the Pacific.
