Inthe winter of 1877-78 the road bedreached as far as Ouinnesec and at theclose of the year to Iron Mountain, Flor-ence, and Crvstal Falls. 338 HISTORY OF THE DIOCESE OF Mr. Buell, the father of Ouinnesec, laidout his town in 1877. Being the firstplatted town on the range the advent ofthe railroad naturally raised it to a sud-den importance. Father Fox was at thetime stationed at Spalding. Seeing histerritory studded all at once with mineshe followed the crowds up the line to thenew town site. The future looked the new homes of the miners andtradesmen rose also a frame church—a. ST. AMBROSE SCHOOL, IRONWOOD. mere shell, unplastered, unfinished. Butsuch as it was it gave him room for ser-vices and a corner for his own abodewhenever he happened to stay in town. Ifthe rough boards could talk they couldtell of the sacrifices of this pioneer-mis-sionary, how often he prepared coffee forhis breakfast in an oyster can! In 1878 the Norway mine became aproducer. Following better and steadierearning facilities new comers soon madea new town and Norway, as the town became known, easily won out over herolder sister, Ouinnesec. In the summer of1878 Father Rosseau was sent to Nor-way to establish a new parish. He fin-ished the church in Ouinnesec and he andhis successors retained it as a mission un-til the end of 1882.
