The best general instructions that can be given are: observecarefully the way the stump stands, the location and size of the roots,the nature of the soil and the size of the stump. The probing speardescribed on page 28 is often of great service in determining justwhat kind of roots a stump has. The kind of wood is important, principally in its bearing on theprobable size and position of the roots.
