This benefice the abbe Fleury ob-tained from the king without difficulty; but, asa strict observer of the canons, resigned onthat occasion his abbacy into the kings he bad been covetous of wealth, he mighthave found pretexts for retaining the latter,which would easily have been admitted; and,indeed, if he had been ambitious of accumu-lating the most valuable preferments, and thehighest dignities, such was the degree of fa-vour in which he stood with the king, that hewould, doubtless, have been fully his disinterestedness was equal to his othervirtues ; and his conscience would not permithim, under any pretences, to break those regu-lations to which he had sworn charge.
