Bush Stone Curlew sitting on its nest, Townsville, Australia, September 2017

Bush Stone Curlews nest on the ground, and attempt to use camouflage and lack of movement to avoid the attention of predators. This nest contains a single egg, although often they contain two. I believe it is the female sitting, while the male is standing guard. If approached to closely, the birds his and threaten by holding wings out wide to increase the perception of their size. This female has been sitting on the egg since late september 2017, and these photos were taken in october, so i am guesstimating incubation probably takes around 4 weeks possibly 5.
