A stage road has beenbuilt across the island and the ride over it is a memor-able experience. The road winds in a serpentine trail upthe bare mountainside, narrow and precipitous most ofthe way, with exhilarating views of land and sea. It isa slow, laborious ascent all the way to the summit, andthe six horses pull with unremitting effort. The boldpromontory upon which we finally rest commands asuperb view of the blue, unruffled sea, with the shoreline to the north and the far-away range of the SierraMadre Mountains.
