The Sheikh Lotfollah Mosque in Isfahan, built by Shah Abbas I between 1602 and 1619, is certainly the most exquisite mosque in Iran and has astonished and delighted travellers for centuries, including Robert Byron, who wrote lyrically of it in his 1937 masterpiece The Road to Oxiana.
