This hawksbill turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata) is taking off from its resting place amongst algae-covered rocks. Very sadly, sea turtles are diminishing rapidly in numbers; indeed, the hawksbill is classified as critically endangered in the IUCN's Red List. Many factors are involved, including entanglement in fishing nets, pollution, the destruction of nesting sites because of erosion and coastal development.
