GEORGIA STATE SANITARIUM 163 1847 enabled the trustees to make markedly beneficial changes inthe asylum. The female patients were placed in the new building, thus entirely separating them from the males. This enlargementalso offered greater facilities, atid the increased appropriations ofmoney for maintenance enabled the authorities to make manyimprovements; the substitution of white attendants for negroeswho had formerly discharged this duty being one of them. In1849 it was found urgently necessary to make additional provisionfor the insane of the state. Plans and estimates were submittedto the Legislature for enlarging the asylum accommodations. Theplan contemplated was the Kirkbride plan, consisting of a large, showy building to be erected in front of the existing wings, andadditions to the latter which would make the structure in the shapeof the capital E. The Legislature appropriated $10,500 for theenlargement of the institution and in 1851 $24,500
