Tiger eye is a pseudomorph of asbestos. It falls in the catagory of a cryptocrystalline (crystals too small to be seen even by a microscope) variety of quartz. These varieties are divided more by character than by color. These different variaties are often used as semi-precious gemstones and for decorative purposes. Tiger's eye has the quality known as chatoyancy, or the appearence of a cat's eye, when cut and polished in the form of a cabochon.
