Atlantic; Gulf of Aden; Gulf of Panama. The specimen from St. 87 was examined alive on board the 'Discovery'. It was observed continually to beat the water with the pectoral fins, suggesting that this action was in some way connected with respiration. When the water was churned, as by pouring in more salt water, or when the illicium was stroked, the luminous distal end emitted a greenish blue light for half a minute or so. This phenomenon was noted three times. Definite projections of the skin in the form of very fine black papillae were noted in six places on each side of the body: three on each side of the lower jaw; one on each side of the head between the nostril and the base of the illicium; and a pair on each side of the back at the middle of the body. The position of these papillae is indicated in the accom- panying Please note that these images are extracted from scanned page images that may have been digitally enhanced for readability - coloration and appearance of these illustrations may not perfectly resemble the original Institute of Oceanographic Sciences (Great Britain); National Institute of Oceanography; Great Britain.
