This rule, however, can not alwaysfollowed rigidly without seriously affecting the external design. In the ordinary one-room school often found in the country districts,with three windows on each side and perhaps two in the rear, the defectin lighting can be remedied fairly well by painting the glass of thewindows on the pupils right and rear a solid black, thus receiving allof the light from the pupils left. If this is insufficient, the light can beincreased by the introduction of prismatic glass in the upper sash of the. CLOISTERS. Mr. Allen highly recommends cloisters for California schools, tempering the light and affording sheltered places for play. windows at a very small cost.
