Ammonite. Geologist holding an ammonite fossil. Ammonites are extinct marine animals which lived between 380 and 65 million years ago. They are distantly related to the modern-day nautilus. They lived in coastal waters and inland seas. The animal itself lived in the last chamber of its coiled shell, and captured its small prey animals with tentacles which protruded from the opening. They died out during the mass extinction which also claimed the dinosaurs. This specimen was found in the Sahara Desert, once a sea.
