Gadbury's book on comets. Title page and illustration from De Cometis (1665, On Comets), by the English astrologer John Gadbury (1627-1704). The illustration at left shows the \three late comets\" mentioned in the text at right. Their dates are: November to December 1644, January 1665, and April 1665. Also marked are astronomical features such as the constellation of Leo, the star Aldebaran, and the Pleiades. The English and Latin texts across bottom describe the dreadful dooms portended by comets. These three comets were among the brightest of the time, and visible all across Europe."
