Inscriptions: Woven signature in lower field, center (border of carpet): Emperor & Empress seated at table before outdoor pavilion amongst trees, attended by servants bringing food & 2 entertainers including female musician L & dancing dwarf; maid drops incense into brazier in foreground near table bearing variety of vessels & attended by additional servant (BRD) picture-frame border with stylized acanthus leaves Initially, famous commissions of this series took place with, notably, 1 set ordered by the duc du Maine & another by his brother the comte de Toulouse; subsequent anonymous commissions followed well into the 18th century. This set was probably 1 of these later commissions.
