Aintab, where missionary work has been exception-ally prosperous, is the site of the College of CentralTurkey. But the institution of which Armenians mayfeel most proud is the well-known Robert College,named after its financial founder, Christopher of New York City. This college, located firstin Bebek and afterward on the heights of RoumeliHissar, is one of the best institutions of the kind inthe world, being well-equipped with excellent pro-fessors and enjoying the patronage of nearly everynationality. It was established in 1863, through the. 148 THE TURK AND THE LAND OF HAIG. influence of Rev. Dr. Cyrus Hamlin, an American whohas since been its constant inspiration. Though not amissionary institution, yet the prosperity of Christianwork among its students has equaled the highestexpectations. Aside from these higher institutions, there aretwenty-six high schools for boys ; nineteen boardingschools, or seminaries, for girls, with about two thou-sand students ; and three hundred and fifty commonschools, containing more than sixteen thousand pupils. The young men are taking increasing interest in theChurch, and a number of Young Mens ChristianAssociations have been organized. By no means theleast blessing is the advancement of woman from herdegradation to a plane of culture and refinement,chiefly owing to the liberality of the natives them-selves in the cause of female education.
