Fig. 41 represents the lace round the ecclesiasticalrobe of Hus^ues Loubeux de Verdale, Cardinal and GrandMaster of the Knights of Malta, who died in 1595, andis buried in the church of St. John, where a maonificenttomb is erected to his memory. Pillow-laces made by women in Ceylon and Travancore,as well as elsewhere in India,^* seem to owe more to theinstruction of the Portuo:uese than to the Dutch or mention it in this place because the specimens of threadpillow-lace from Point de Galle and Candy bear a striking ^ •• A lace of similar character (Mai- in the missionary schools at Madras tese) has also been made successfully (Mrs. Palliser).
