Great green macaw (Ara ambiguus), head close-up. This large parrot is found in forests throughout South and Central America. It eats a variety of foods, including fruits, seeds and nuts, using its large, powerful beak to crack open tough nutshells. Macaws are the largest birds in the parrot family and are known to live for 80 years in captivity. Photographed in Costa Rica.
