The ARCHES OF THE PALATE Or FAUCES dcsccnd on eachside from the velum palati. They are muscular fibres, coveredwith the soft vascular and follicular membrane of the fauces.*There are two on each side. These arches stand at some dis-tance from each other, so that the isthmus of the fauces resem-bles the double-arched gateway of a citadel, or the arched roofof a cathedral, with the uvula hanging as from the centralunion of four semicircular arches. Uvula ^ Amygdala. • The Anterior Arch, Posterior Archof the Palate. Behind the soft palate is the opening of the nose backwardinto the throat. Now, the use of the velum is, that in swal-lowing, it may be drawn up like a valve upon the posterioropening of the nose ; and there being, at the same time, anaction of the arches of the palate, the whole is brought intoa funnel-like shape, directing the morsel into the pharynx andgullet. In this action the direction of the food assists, but,in vomiting, the valvular action of the velum is not so accu-rate : and often the nose is assailed with the contents of the See Vol. I.
