Arenavirus particles. Transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a cluster of Arenavirus particles. Arenavirus is a genus of virus that infects rodents and occasionally humans. At least eight Arenaviruses are known to cause human disease. These virions are of a newly discovered Arenavirus that was determined to be the cause of fatal haemorrhagic fever in five South African people, four of whom died.
