Symptomatic of railway closures all over Britain the Great Central was the last main line to reach London which had opened as recently as the turn of the century and was a key through route for cross country workings. The line was built to continental loading gauge in anticipation of through services linking industrial cities of Great Britain with those of the continent via the Channel Tunnel upon which work had begun
