A view of shops at street level and apartment blocks along Karel Doormanstraat, the (de) Lijnbaan, Rotterdam, the Netherlands in the 1960s. The layout of the residential development, which opened in the late 1950s, separated shops from apartments and were arranged around green courtyards. It was designed by the firm Van den Broek & Bakema led by architects Jo van den Broek and Jacob B (Jaap) Bakema. Today this area completely pedestrianised with many eating and drinking places with outdoor seating along this street – a vintage 1960s photograph.

A view of the shops at street level and apartment blocks along Karel Doormanstraat, the (de) Lijnbaan, Rotterdam, the Netherlands in the 1960s. The layout of the residential development, which opened in the late 1950s, separated shops from apartments. The high-rise blocks (some were 40 metres in height, with 14 floors) were arranged around green courtyards, designed for the children of residents to play away from the traffic. These days there are many eating and drinking establishments with outdoor seating along this street, with a Turkish restaurant located where the business of ‘De Olive H Van 1879’ was. Today this area completely pedestrianised. The Lijnbaan shopping precinct opened in 1953, as the main pedestrian street in the new shopping district, after the old area was completely destroyed during World War II by German bombing. It was designed by the firm Van den Broek & Bakema led by architects Jo van den Broek (1898–1978) and Jacob B (Jaap) Bakema (1914–1981). It was the first purpose-built pedestrian street in Europe. The car-free area proved successful and has influenced numerous similar schemes around the world. This image is from an old amateur black and white transparency. It will look soft if used at too large a size – a vintage 1960s photograph.
