1926 coloured Dutch illustration -neing a coloured portrait of William of Orange aka William the Silent, William the Taciturn, Willem van Oranje and Willem de Zwijger. He was the main leader of the Dutch Revolt against the Spanish Habsburgs that triggered the Eighty Years' War (1568–1648). He became Prince of Orange (House of Nassau), in 1544 and was the founder of the Orange-Nassau branch and the ancestor of the monarchy of the Netherlands, hence his Dutch title Vader des Vaderlands ( Father of the Fatherland ). William was said to be the first head of state to be assassinated by handgun
