This type of rigid airship is named after the German inventor Count Ferdinand von Zeppelin. Zeppelins were first flown commercially in 1910 by Deutsche Luftschiffahrts AG (DELAG). The Imperial German Army bought LZ 3 and LZ 5 from the Zeppelin Construction Company ( Ferdinand von Zeppelin) and renamed them Z 1 and Z II respectively
