While the vagal irregularities of heart rhythm generallyshow a respiratory relation, disturbances of similar originoccur where there is no association between the changes andthe several acts of breathing. These disorders of the heartmechanism fall into three main categories. They are :—(1) Sudden and prolonged cessation of the whole heart beat,a condition so rare that it requires but a passing notice inthis general survey. (2) Phasic variation of pulse rate, inwhich a retardation and subsequent gradual accelerationof the whole heart occurs ; the change is spread over ten,fifteen or more seconds and may be repeated regularly ormay occur from time to time ; it is associated with theadministration of heavy doses of drugs of the digitalis group,but may be seen apart from them (Fig. 7) ; relatively, it is anuncommon type of irregularity.
