Blue sky view of the white surf water of Bahia Cocotue, displaying wave-refraction, on the Pacific Coast of Chiloe Island, Chile
The basalt lava flows of the Ancud Volcanic Complex form high cliffs on the north side of Cocotue Bay, on the Pacific Coast of Chiloe Island, west of Ancud. Small roads lead to deserted beaches and fishing villages. Frictional drag with the bay margins allows the wave crests to move at faster rate into the deeper waters of the bay centre, so giving rise to 'wave-refraction' or the bending of wave crests by bays and headland.
