Multiple ectopic pregnancy. Artwork of multiple ectopic pregnancies. Embryos are seen as circular structures which have implanted in the ovaries (centre right), fallopian tubes (at upper right and centre) and in the cervix (at bottom left). In ectopic pregnancy, the embryo implants outside the uterus (the triangular structure at centre left). Most ectopic pregnancies develop in the fallopian tubes, the others seen here are rare occurrences. As the ectopic pregnancy develops the growing embryo may rupture the surrounding tissues causing serious bleeding. Surgery is performed to remove the embryo, and to repair or remove the area of implantation.
