Old meets new – a traditional, busy Sunday street market in the modern setting of Brasília, Brazil 1961. The dull conditions haven’t put off the crowds, very much male dominated. The architecture of the unfinished modern city is seen in the background. Brasília is the federal capital of Brazil. The city is located in the Brazilian highlands in the country's centre-west region. Brasília was a planned city developed by Lúcio Costa, Oscar Niemeyer and Joaquim Cardozo in 1956. Old meets new – a traditional, busy Sunday street market in the modern setting of Brasília, Brazil 1961. The dull conditions haven’t put off the crowds, very much male dominated. The architecture of the unfinished modern city is seen in the background. Brasília is the federal capital of Brazil and seat of government of the Federal District. The city is located at the top of the Brazilian highlands in the country's centre-west region. It was founded by President Juscelino Kubitschek in 1960, to serve as the new national capital. Brasília was a planned city developed by Lúcio Costa, Oscar Niemeyer and Joaquim Cardozo in 1956 in a scheme to move the capital from Rio de Janeiro to a more central location. This image is from an old amateur 35mm colour transparency. It will look soft if used at too large a size – a vintage 1960s photograph.
