Henry Thomas de la Beche (1796-1855), British geologist. De la Beche served in the Napoleonic wars and at their conclusion gave up an army career and devoted himself to geology. During the late 1820s he began his most significant work, the first systematic geological survey of the British Isles. His efforts led to the establishment of the Geological Survey of Great Britain in 1835, with himself as its first director. He was knighted in 1848.
